Last year, Google updated its messenger service to Google Hangouts. I think this was necessary for Google, as smart phone messengers like Whatsapp were becoming more popular and Google had to offer something useful like that. I still have Google Talk installed on my windows laptop, but I do not use it. If you have just bought your windows pc or laptop and you are looking for the Google Talk software, then Google will disappoint you! Google now redirects you to Google Hangouts extension for Google Chrome. If you install Google Hangouts extension, it makes Google Chrome to always run in the background. That means, you are always online on Google Hangouts, whenever you start your computer and connect with the internet.

I think no one would mind to be always connected, but there should not be the online status indicator along with our name. You are always connected to the Whatsapp on your smart phone, but it only shows you online, when you actually open that application. You do receive messages from friends all the time whenever you are connected to the internet, but they do not see you “Online”. Google Hangouts for PC has this disadvantage. Whenever you connect to the internet, people start seeing you online. Though if you have not opened it for a long time, it shows your status as “Away”.
I have older version of Android phone (I just bought a new one 2 hours ago 🙂 ). I can not update Google Talk application on my phone to Google Hangouts. My friends recently started buying their first Android phone. As the technology evolved, they got better phones. Whenever someone starts being visible on Google Talk all the time, I knew that they bought new Android phone. When they use Google Hangouts on android phone, they become visible on Google Talk application, even if they are not connected to the internet. Though their status shows them “Away”.

Still if you want to download Google Talk software, you can download it from software download sites, like filehippo.com. You would see some of your friends online on Google Talk that otherwise are not visible as “Online” on Google Hangouts.
