Yesterday, I talked about nrelate. This is the best related posts widget that I have seen so far. nrelate gives you the opportunity to show advertisements to earn from related posts. You get statistics for advertisement clicks. You can decide the number of advertisements that you want to show between related posts. But I yet to know the earning potential of this system. I do not know how they decide the click rate. I even did not understand their concept behind Ad Quality. The payment will be processed via Paypal.

I recently found Zemanta content discovery platform. I never tried Zemanta on any of my blogs yet. But they offer promoted links to show along with related posts to earn money. Outbrain also allows promoted links but only to donate all the money to some charity. I hope they would allow to earn money from their widget in future.
I think though promoted links is a good source of income, but those advertisements should not be on the cost of good user experience. keep minimum advertisements in related post. I suggest you to keep just one advertisement with 3 to 4 related posts. You can do your own experiments regarding this on your blog.
